Kruger NATIONal PARK GATES: Which Gate to Use for Your TRIP
One of the first decisions you make after booking your accommodation is which gate to use. This matters more than many first-time visitors expect, because it shapes your driving route, how long it takes to reach camp, how relaxed your first day feels, and which part of the park you can access most easily.
Kruger has nine entrance gates, and each one suits a different route, region, or style of trip. Some are more convenient for southern camps, some are better for central Kruger, and others only really make sense if you are intentionally heading north.
It is also important to give yourself plenty of time, as both entrance gates and camp gates close at night.
Here is a practical guide to all nine gates, and how to think about them when planning your trip.
1. Malelane Gate
Best for: Berg-en-Dal stays, Biyamiti access, and southern Kruger arrivals from the N4 side.
Malelane Gate is one of the most convenient southern entrances and is a strong option for visitors heading to Berg-en-Dal or Biyamiti. Berg-en-Dal is only 12 km from the gate, which makes this a comfortable choice for a first day in the park.
It works especially well for travellers approaching from the N4 side or entering Kruger from the south-west. If you want a smooth arrival, a shorter drive to camp, and quick access to southern Kruger, Malelane is a very practical choice.
2. Crocodile Bridge Gate
Best for: Lower Sabie trips, Crocodile Bridge Camp stays, and Marloth Park day visitors.
Crocodile Bridge Gate is another southern entrance and is often a very practical option for visitors staying around Lower Sabie or at Crocodile Bridge Camp itself.
Crocodile Bridge Camp is right at the gate, while Lower Sabie is 34 km away. This gate is also extremely popular for day visitors coming from Marloth Park.
If your route or accommodation is focused on the far south-east of Kruger, Crocodile Bridge is a very useful gate to consider. It gets you into the park quickly and can make the first part of your drive feel simple and efficient.
3. Numbi Gate
Best for: Pretoriuskop stays and shorter first-day drives in the south-west.
Numbi Gate is one of the traditional access points for the south-western side of Kruger and is a good option for visitors heading to Pretoriuskop, which is only 9 km away.
It is often a sensible choice if Pretoriuskop is your base and you want to keep your first in-park drive short. For families and first-time visitors, that can make the first day feel much less rushed.
4. Orpen Gate
Best for: Satara trips, Talamati stays, Orpen Camp access, and visitors coming via Hoedspruit.
Orpen Gate is one of the key entrances for the central region of Kruger. It is a practical gate for visitors heading to Satara, Talamati, and Orpen Camp. Orpen Camp is right at the gate, Talamati is 30 km away, and Satara is 48 km away.
This gate is especially useful if your trip is focused on central Kruger or if you are approaching from the Hoedspruit side. It is one of the most logical choices for visitors who want to base themselves around some of the park’s central camps.
5. Pafuri Gate
Best for: far northern itineraries and travellers intentionally exploring the top of Kruger.
Pafuri Gate serves the far north of Kruger and is really only the right choice if you are intentionally exploring the northernmost part of the park.
It is not usually the most convenient gate for short trips or first-time visitors doing a classic southern or central Kruger route. But if your accommodation and travel plans are built around the north, Pafuri can be exactly the right entry point.
6. Paul Kruger Gate
Best for: Skukuza stays, Hazyview access, and visitors wanting a straightforward route into one of Kruger’s main hubs.
Paul Kruger Gate, often called Kruger Gate, is one of the best-known entrances and is the main gate for visitors heading to Skukuza. Skukuza is only 12 km from the gate.
This gate works particularly well for visitors based around Hazyview or those wanting straightforward access to one of Kruger’s main hubs. If Skukuza is your first stop, Paul Kruger Gate is one of the most obvious and convenient choices.
7. Phabeni Gate
Best for: Hazyview stays, Skukuza trips, and visitors wanting flexibility between Skukuza and Pretoriuskop.
Phabeni Gate is another strong southern access point and is often used for both Skukuza and Pretoriuskop. It is especially convenient for visitors staying in or near Hazyview, as it is only a short drive away.
If you want flexibility between Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, or you are entering from the Hazyview side, Phabeni is a very practical gate to use.
8. Phalaborwa Gate
Best for: central-to-northern Kruger access, Phalaborwa arrivals, and visitors flying into the area.
Phalaborwa Gate is a major access point for the central-to-northern side of Kruger. It is especially convenient if you are arriving via Phalaborwa itself or flying into the area.
This gate makes a lot of sense for visitors approaching from Limpopo or those wanting easier access to the park without entering through the busier southern side. It is a sensible choice when your trip is focused more on central or northern Kruger.
9. Punda Maria Gate
Best for: northern Kruger itineraries, Punda Maria Camp stays, and quieter far-north trips.
Punda Maria Gate gives access to the far north of Kruger and is usually chosen by travellers who are building a northern Kruger itinerary on purpose.
It suits visitors staying near Punda Maria Camp or those wanting to spend proper time exploring the quieter northern section of the park. Like Pafuri, it is less about convenience for a general trip and more about being the right fit for a very specific route.
How to choose the right gate
The simplest way to choose your gate is to start with where you are sleeping on night one. The most practical gate is usually the one that gives you the shortest and least stressful drive to camp.
After that, think about your approach route. Visitors coming from Hazyview will often find Paul Kruger Gate or Phabeni Gate most convenient. Those staying in Marloth Park often use Crocodile Bridge. Travellers approaching from Hoedspruit may find Orpen the better fit, while Phalaborwa Gate makes the most sense if you are entering from Phalaborwa or the Limpopo side.
Finally, always check gate hours before you travel, as opening and closing times change through the year. It is also worth completing any entry paperwork in advance where possible, so that your arrival goes more smoothly.
Choosing the right gate will not guarantee sightings, but it can make your trip feel calmer, easier, and much better planned from the start. And in Kruger, that usually makes a real difference.
